Capital Gazette: Right Stuff: Freedom of speech should be for all

Last week the legislatures in Indiana and Arkansas passed their own Religious Freedom Restoration Acts (RFRA), similar to the laws in 19 other states and the federal government. Indiana’s governor, Mike Pence, was pummeled on national television and Indianapolis became ground zero for protesters.

Opponents of Indiana’s RFRA have claimed it will legalize discrimination against gays. Proponents of the law say it protects business owners from lawsuits for following their conscience.

Supporters of gay marriage have always couched the debate in terms of love, privacy, conscience, and a live-and-let-live attitude. But for a small minority, however, it is a weapon to attack the established social order.

In places like Oregon, activists have sought out Christian-owned businesses to confront. Rather than using a photographer or baker who wants their business, activists are seeking out those who don’t in order to sue them into oblivion. You’ll like gay marriage, or else.
