Cagle: If You Want a Political Witch Hunt, Look at Texas

All of the noise surrounding Governor Rick Perry attempting to legitimize his recent indictment is completely unjust and a textbook example of a political witch-hunt. Perry has been accused of “abuse of his office and coercing a public official” when in actuality, he was using his power to veto funding to Rosemary Lehmberg, a convicted drunk driver who also happened to be a Travis County District Attorney. Governor Perry was simply doing the right thing by calling on her to resign.

None of Perry’s actions were outside of the constitutional authority given to a Texas Governor. Even liberal media outlets such as MSNBC and The New York Times have cited the absurd accusations in articles of their own titled “The weak case against Rick Perry” and “The Strange Case Against Rick Perry.” This case, returned by the grand jury on Friday, is a complete mockery and a clean-cut case of dirty politics. Remember, this is the same D.A. office that brought trumped-up charges against former House Majority Leader Tom Delay and the case was later thrown out by a higher court.

Governor Perry has responded to the indictment stating, “I stood up for the rule of law in the state of Texas, and if I had to do it again, I would make exactly the same decision.” By personally attacking Perry with the “indictment” headline, the news story itself did its job by getting it into people’s heads that he was charged with a crime – no matter how unfounded and ludicrous the charges may be. Texas’ Senator Ted Cruz had this to say about the indictment, “Unfortunately, there has been a sad history of the Travis County District Attorney’s Office engaging in politically-motivated prosecutions, and this latest indictment of the governor is extremely questionable.”
