Cagle Post: Keeping an Eye on Iran as We Remember 9-11

Eleven years ago, the United States of America was attacked by Al-Qaeda and nearly 3,000 people lost their lives because America slept as an enemy was rising. We have taken the fight to Al-Qaeda over the course of the last eleven years, with the killing of Osama bin Laden and capture of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, but work still needs to be done. What has always been Al-Qaeda’s strength is that they have time on their side. America cannot turn back the clock to a pre-9-11 mentality where we ignore potential threats. If we do, we do so at our own peril and put the rest of the world at risk.

That is why the Obama Administration’s handling of the threat of a nuclear Iran is so troubling. Since President Obama took office he has done nothing to stop Iran from building a nuclear weapon. Obama’s policy is one of “engagement” with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Clearly, this policy has not worked because the centrifuges keep on spinning and they are developing the necessary fuel for a weapon. President Obama should have imposed crippling sanctions from Day One instead of negotiating for negotiation’s sake.
