CU & CUF Join With Other Conservatives In Defending Religious Liberty
Citizens United and Citizens United Foundation joins with other conservative groups in filing a U.S. Supreme Court amicus brief defending the right of a Christian baker to refuse to design a custom wedding cake celebrating the wedding of a gay couple. The brief, which was filed in Masterpiece Cakeshop v.Colorado Civil Rights Commission, contends that Colorado’s effort to force the baker to create a custom cake for a gay couple violates the First Amendment’s freedom of religion clause and is “an indicia of a totalitarian state, where the state will not allow individuals to be left alone, but must be brought to conform” with the political agenda of the gay rights community. “The question now,” says the brief, “is whether this Court will disregard well-established legal principles in order to throw to the wolves those who continue to embrace Biblical values and teachings.”
