UNaccountable: Reform UN Funding
The United Nations is a cash cow that continues to rely on American taxpayer money to fund its anti-Israel and anti-American views. But yesterday landmark legislation was passed out of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs that will change the pay structure of how the U.N. collects its dues, from an assessment based on its budget, to a voluntary contribution. This important piece of legislation, championed by Foreign Affairs Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, will finally make the U.N. accountable for how it spends our money.
Last year America was assessed with a bill for 22 percent of the U.N. budget, or $7.7 billion. By contrast, China was assessed only 3 percent. The disparity is obvious, and the American taxpayer is getting taken advantage of. Unfortunately, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Obama oppose this commonsense piece of legislation because they claim it will dissuade member nations from contributing to the rebuilding of Iraq and Afghanistan. Come on! Most of the member nations do not help now and some, like Iran, have had an active role in the insurgencies. You’d think that so-called “change agents” like President Obama would welcome the obvious need for reform at the U.N.
In the coming weeks, I hope the full House of Representatives passes this legislation. The United Nations’ time taking advantage of American taxpayers needs to end now. Paying $7.7 billion to an organization that is just a sounding board for rogue countries does not make any sense.
