Senate Democrats Need to Cowboy Up on Cutting the Budget

Senate Democrats claimed last week that they would cut $6.5 billion from the 2011 budget, which has still not even been passed yet. But last night, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a report saying that the Senate Democrats’ plan was off by almost $2 billion and would actually only cut $4.7 billion. This error, combined with the fact that Republicans are proposing to cut 13 times as much ($61 billion), proves Harry Reid and the rest of his caucus simply do not take America’s fiscal crisis seriously.

Harry Reid should be more worried about the
record $223 billion deficit the government posted last month but instead he took to the Senate floor to complain that Republicans would cut taxpayer funding for a cowboy poetry festival in his home state of Nevada. Reid preposterously claimed, “Had that program not been around, the tens of thousands of people who come there every year would not exist.” Reid’s statement would be funny if Americans weren’t not drowning in debt.
